Dear Parents and Students -

The following information is an update about some upcoming band events and information. For our full calendar, please visit the calendar section of our website by clicking on this link.


  • Big Band Rehearsal is every Tuesday from 6-8pm.

  • Thu/Nov 1: Marching Band Recognition Night, 7pm, Cafeteria

  • Thu/Nov 8: Full Marching Rehearsal for Light Up the Holidays Parade, 3:30-5:30pm (time has been changed to accommodate the All-City Band concert.)

  • Fri/Nov 9: Symphonic Band Performance at Veteran’s Day Assembly, period 7 & 8

  • Thu/Nov 15: Full Marching Rehearsal for Light Up the Holidays Parade, 6-8pm is CANCELED - NO REHEARSAL

  • *Sun/Nov 18: Fall Concert, 3pm. Concert band call time: 2pm. Symphonic Band call time: 1:30pm for rehearsal with guest artist*

  • Fri/Nov 23: Light Up the Holidays Parade, Marching Band; Downtown Joliet


Our Fall concert is Sunday, November 19 at 3pm. Concert band call time: 2pm. Symphonic Band call time: 1:30pm for rehearsal with guest artist. We offer some leniency on pep band and some marching band events, but home concerts and festivals are mandatory and for a grade! All of the students depend on each other for a great performance; attendance at these events is very important.

Dress is concert black. Students are being fitted this week. They should remember to bring their black dress shoes and long black socks for the concert, along with their white tuxedo shirt (men). Women should wear flat black shoes (marching band shoes are OK). Heels or high shoes are tough to walk on stage with, and students could end up falling in these shoes. Please - no excessive jewelry or excessive make-up.

We also would love to see more audience members at our concert. Concerts are free and open to the public, so please help us spread the word! We are lucky enough to have a nationally known featured Guest Artist, Dr. Leah Schuman, performing with us. Not many schools get to do things in band like we do!


Our commissioning project is off and running. By May, our students will get to perform a piece written specifically for them from a Hollywood Composer (that just happens to be a Joliet Central Alum). If you or someone you know would like to donate towards this campaign, please view the link below. Even if you are unable to donate, please feel free to share this link. This is a great opportunity for our students!



Students in concert and symphonic band have playing assessments, also known as Smartmusic Assignments, that are due. We typically use these assessments to make sure that we are prepared on concert and festival music. If your student is missing any Smartmusic assignments in the grade book, please help to encourage them to complete these. Students may access Smartmusic assignments on their device wherever the have internet.


Thank you to everyone that participated in our recent fundraisers! We sold over 400 bags of popcorn. These profits help to keep our band program affordable for all.

Fall Concert: November 18, 2018 at 3pm. Guest Artist: Dr. Leah Schuman

The Joliet Central Bands present their Fall concert on Sunday, November 18, 3pm, in the Joliet Central High School Auditorium.

The concert will feature the Joliet Central Concert Band and the Joliet Central Symphonic Band. Special guest artist with the symphonic band is Dr. Leah Schuman, trumpet professor from VanderCook College of Music. Dr. Schuman will be soloing on “Grand Russian Fantasia” and will perform as part of a trumpet ensemble on LeRoy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday.” Dr. Schuman’s performance is graciously sponsored by the JTHS Foundation. Additional trumpet ensemble members include Washington Junior High and Joliet All-City Band director Mr. R. Scott Barnas and student trumpeters Jakob Gudeman, Brian Guzman, Dustin Peloquin, and Tony Toledo.


The concert is free and open to the public. Guests should enter through the main entrance or through the J doors.

Artist bio: Leah Schuman is in her 18th year as Professor of Trumpet at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, where she has worked with hundreds of band directors and music teachers from across the United States and many parts of the world.  She maintains an active career as a performer and clinician throughout the Chicagoland area and across the country.  She holds the degrees of Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY as well as a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance from Northwestern University.  She is a former member of the St. Petersburg (Russia) State Chamber Orchestra and the Mahler Festival Orchestra in Boulder, Colorado.

Dr. Schuman is also the Executive Director of the One City program at VanderCook College, which provides free musical instruments and jazz instruction to children in grades five through eight from underserved communities on Chicago's south side.

·       Wednesday, September 19: Powder Puff Game Performance, 4pm call time, 5pm game start.  Spirit wear/band t-shirt; leave after halftime. Meet in band room.

·       Thursday, September 20: PERFORMANCE: JTHS Foundation Reception for Arlene Albert. Please be dressed by 4:15pm; 5pm performance. Expected completion time: 6pm. Uniforms: please have black socks, black drillmaster shoes, band t-shirt.

·       Friday, September 21: Pep Assembly: during school (wear spirit wear).  Released 7th, attend 8th.

·       Saturday, September 22: Homecoming Parade & Homecoming Football Game

o   Parade Information:

§  Call time: 7:45am

§  Dressed: begin getting dressed at 8am.  Ready by 9am. Black socks, black shoes, band t-shirt.

§  Step off (approximate): 9:30am outside of Joliet Central.

§  Route can be found on www.jths.org – parade begins on Herkimer.

o   Game information:

§  Call time: DRESSED by noon.

·       It will be a while before you eat at the game. (Of course, don’t eat in your uniform jacket).

·       Students may not leave the premises in their uniform! 

§  Game start: 1:00pm

§  Tickets are available presale only! Please check www.jths.org for ticket information. The band does not sell or have resources for game tickets.

ILMEA HELP SESSION: Band students interested in auditioning for ILMEA: Illinois State University is hosting a help session day on Sunday, September 16th. Please see this post if you are interested. We will not be providing transportation, so if you/your student is interested, please make sure that you have a ride/carpool.

High School Band students are invited to this FREE event to learn from our Applied Faculty in instrumental masterclasses. Faculty will also work with students on the Illinois All-State audition music sharing performance advice for each instrument. Students and families that attend the event will be given complimentary tickets to the afternoon concert by the Illinois State University Wind Symphony.

MEMO: Elwood Parade

Saturday, August 25, 2018; ALL band members.

8:30am: call time at JCHS.  Dress, prepare equipment. Please plan on full uniforms, but have your marching t-shirt, khaki pants, and black shoes in case we decide on the summer uniform due to heat.
9:00am: load buses.
9:15am: bus leaves JCHS.
10:00am: Line up on South Street.
11:00am: Parade step-off. We are number 17.
12:30pm: parade ends (estimated). Load buses near Diagonal Road.
Bus back to Joliet Central.  Put equipment away and hang up uniforms. Approximate return time: 1:30pm.

Graduation Memo

AVAC Graduation: Friday, May 25; 7:20am report, perform during periods 2, 3. Please bring all uniform attire needed that morning! We are very lucky to be a part of this tradition every year!


5:00pm: call time; begin dressing.  Seniors may arrive as early as 4:30pm. Mr. Stinson will have your graduation cards for you.

“Concert” & Graduation Order

·         Midway March, Longford Legend II, I, John Williams in Concert (no scream), La Procession, Second Prelude, Stars and Stripes; Sine Nomine; Pomp and Circumstance; March of the Steelmen; Joliet Loyalty (by memory)

Bring equipment to the gymnasium and set up.  Rack stands, and bring percussion equipment and conductor podium.

5:45pm: leave for gymnasium as a group; single file, straight line.  Bring instruments, music, accessories.

6:15pm: begin pre-concert music.  6:55pm: Stars and Stripes.  7:00pm: Sine Nomine.

After graduation: EVERYONE (except seniors) helps bring equipment back to the band room.  Graduation is your final grade in the gradebook and tearing down is part of our job. 

Seniors: please check in instruments, Snark Tuners, and equipment after graduation to the band office.  All band members: make sure your lockers are clean!  You may leave instruments in your lockers if you are returning, but they must be clearly marked with your name (masking tape available in the band office – don’t write on cases).

Seniors! Good Luck! You will receive your diplomas after you turn in all your equipment. Please remember to pick this up from Mr. Stinson following graduation.

4/30/2018 Update: SuperState, Final Concert, Graduation, Summer

What a year so far (but we're still not done!).Congratulations to the band for a successful trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The students performed at the Smoky Mountain Music Festival and earned the following: 1st Place Class 4A, Superior Rating, Outstanding Flute Section, Outstanding Horn Section, and Outstanding Tuba Section. Outstanding soloist awards were awarded to the following students: Zach Sperstad, Trumpet; Mariah Frykholm, Saxophone; Sydni Smith, Piccolo, and Valeria Perez, Flute. Great job to all! Thank you to all students and chaperone helpers for a successful trip. Next band trip is 2019-2020. Location: to be determined.

Now, on to the next. Some reminders regarding upcoming dates:

  • Thurs/May 3: SIP Day - please encourage your students to attend. These are attendance days.
  • Sat/Mat 5: SuperState (Symphonic Band). Permission forms still available. 8am call, 9am departure. Early bus leaves University of Illinois at 3:45pm with a chaperone; late bus leaves 9:30pm from U of I. 
  • Tues/May 8: Final Band Parent Association Meeting of the year. 7pm, band room.
  • Sun/May 20: Spring Band Concert (all band members). 2pm call, 3pm start.
  • Fri/May 25: AVAC/Transition Center Graduation (Symphonic Band): morning ceremony/during school.
  • Fri/June 1: Graduation (Symphonic Band). Evening - call time available soon.
  • Tues/June 12: First marching band rehearsal for 2018-2019 band! 6-8pm.

Updates for April/May (Bonus - Band Camp Dates)

Parents and Students - we are quickly approaching the close to another school year! As always, please check our calendar for all dates and events by visiting the calendar section of this website, or by clicking this link. Below is some additional information about upcoming events.

  • Dinner Dance: tickets are still available for our dinner dance on Friday, April 20. Although this dinner features our jazz groups, this dinner benefits the entire band program and is one of our largest fundraisers. Please Contact Band Parent Treasurer Jackie Bedolla at 815-919-8313 for tickets - $45 a person, or $85 per couple for dinner, music and dancing at the Jacob Henry Mansion starting at 6:30pm.
  • Band Trip: Band trip rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7-9pm, up to the week of the trip. Our final parent and student trip meeting will be Tuesday, April 24, from 6:30-7pm; our final rehearsal for students will follow. During this meeting, students and adults will receive a packet containing the final, updated itinerary, rooming list, student expectations, clothing & uniform checklist, and some things to keep in mind. Emergency numbers for the director and chaperones will be supplied, and we will go over school rules, policies, and discipline procedures.
  • SuperState - for the second year in a row, our Symphonic Band has been accepted to perform at the Illinois SuperState Festival. We are all extremely proud of the work our fine students have done. SuperState is one of the highest honors in the state of Illinois, and we are proud to be involved and representing the city of Joliet.  SuperState is May 5, 2018, and a timeline is located on our calendar.  Call time will be 8am, and we will leave at 9am for the University of Illinois. Our official performance time is 1:45pm. If you are able to make it to watch your child perform, there is no greater concert hall - they will sound fantastic! If you are unable to attend, you can enjoy the livestream at www.banddirector.com. We will provide an early bus back that will leave at 3:45pm for those students wanting to come back early, and the other buses will remain until the conclusion of the festival to listen to the University of Illinois Wind Symphony and attend the recognition ceremony. Approximate departure time for the late bus from U of I is 9:15pm. 
  • Final Concert is May 20 - 3pm. Please join us in celebrating our seniors in their final band concert!
  • Friday, June 1: Graduation. Symphonic Performance - timeline to come out soon.
  • BAND CAMP! Band Camp will be the week of July 30. More details will follow regarding summer band.

German Exchange Hosting

Dear Band Families - 

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting a German high school jazz band this summer.  This event will take place from July 12-14.

School: the visiting group is the Goethes Groove Connection, which is the big band of the Goethe High School in Emmendingen, Germany.  This group consists of 25 musicians, ages 14-18.

As part of our hosting requirement, we are looking for volunteer families to host two German high school students in their home.  Hosts would be required for housing students for two nights and supplying meals and transporting guests to and from rehearsal areas and a performance.  

All interested hosts should contact Mr. Stinson via dstinson@jths.org as soon as possible for more information.

Family Assignments
Visiting European guests being placed in private homes with families is the most unique element of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. This format allows our European guests to truly experience American culture and form lasting friendships with our young people. Community groups, churches, school clubs, and student artistic ensembles are all good resources for host families. Host families should have a genuine vested interest in meeting and hosting European guests.

The family should have the means to properly host the students including being able to fulfill the transportation requirements, provide three meals a day and provide educational and fun activities for the guests. Houses may be simple, and need not be large and fancy - but must be clean! It is difficult and sometimes embarrassing for all when a student or guest must be moved.

A few guidelines to housing the guests:
 Students (not staff or chaperones unless married) may share a queen size bed, if necessary. This is more common for females.
 Students should be housed with youth that are the same gender and preferably not with a single host of the opposite gender.
 Pull out couches, futons, and/or air mattresses are acceptable forms of beds, if they are in a clean and private area.
 It is preferable to have students housed in pairs of two or more. This makes the guests feel more comfortable while in a new place. 

Hosting Expectations for Families and Community Host families should be willing to follow the general itinerary developed for the group, as well as the ability and willingness to share with our European guests the interesting sights and activities in your community. While families are encouraged to show our guests the special sites in the area, there is no expectation that the host family incur additional fees for their guests. If a family chooses to take their guests to an activity that requires admission or expense, the family should be willing to cover that cost for the guest. Host families should be encouraged to have a complete schedule of activities and realize the importance of having guests to the designated places on time. Host families are responsible for the following during a home stay:

 Providing transportation to rehearsals, concerts, scheduled activities and departure for the next tour stop.
 Three meals a day for the guests
 A clean bed in a private area of the home
 A sack meal for the day the group departs
 Having fun getting to know their guest and showing the best of American Culture!

2/26/2018: Updates and Reminders

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful concert yesterday, including All City Band, American Legion Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and our Joliet Central Band Parent Association for helping out!

On March 24, we will be running our Mattress Sale Fundraiser at Joliet Central High School.  The company we are working with is under new management, and we are excited to roll this fundraiser out.  


In the mail, you will be receiving a flier about the parent meeting we will be holding on Tuesday, March 6 at 7pm in the Band Room.  Please make every effort to attend this meeting, as we will be discussing the mattress sale, the upcoming band trip, and some possible changes for instrument rental/equipment in the future.

Do you need to replace a bed in your home?  Know someone who does?

We will be hosting our 1st annual Mattress Sale Fundraiser on March 24th .

There will be over 20 beds on display for customers to try.  The beds are new, brand name, made to order, available in all sizes, and cost less than retail stores.  In addition to beds, there will also be pillows, mattress protectors, sheets, and adjustable power bases!  Financing options will also be available!  I know of several colleagues who have run this same event with their programs, and in the Chicago area, the AVERAGE amount raised in one day is over $5,000! 


This is an excellent opportunity to raise money for our Band program. Best of all, our students and parents will NOT be selling, filling out order forms, collecting money, or delivering anything!  ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS PROMOTE!  10% of the population buys a mattress every year, so we all need to find at least two people who are in the market for a mattress and our event will be highly successful.

What we need from our Band families between now and March 24th is to be finding people in the market for a new mattress and ask them to come to our sale. Take a minute to ask around the office, at church or with your family and neighbors.  You won't believe how many people are currently planning to replace a bed in their home. It’s a unique opportunity for them to buy something they actually need, while supporting our program!  Personal referrals drive 90% of the sales at our event!
